For more than 150 years, Colorado State University has been key to the identity of Fort Collins.

The University established in 1870 has evolved from being known as Colorado Agricultural College and Colorado A&M.

CSU now employs more than 7,000 people — The Coloradoan tracks all employee salaries in an online database as part of its government accountability mission.

Like many universities around the country, CSU's athletics department dominates the top of the pay grade.

Here are the five highest paid employees currently at CSU:

Athletics aren't just paid a premium in Fort Collins. At the University of Colorado, football coach Karl Dorrell makes a base salary of $3.2 million. Buffaloes basketball coach Tad Boyle makes $1.5 million.

University of Colorado president Mark Kennedy makes $850,000.

Some university presidents around the country are now making more than $1 million annually. University of Texas president William H. McRaven makes $1.5 million a year and Ohio State University President Michael V. Drake makes $1.07 million, according to media reports.
