Check out the Chicken Olympics at the Farmers’ Market this Year

It's going to be a clucking good time on the morning of September 11, when multiple local chickens leave their coops to compete in the inaugural Chicken Olympics at the Larimer County Farmers' Market.

The special event begins at 10 a.m. and will take place at 200 West Oak Street in Fort Collins. In true Olympic fashion, the games will kick off with an opening ceremony.

As of now, three chickens are set to participate in the games, including Loretta and Prudence who are pictured below. The events that the birds will be competing in are sprints, steeplechase, and long jump/reach.

The chickens are owned by Alison O'Connor, who runs the Larimer County Farmers' Market.

According to LCFM manager, Emily Alligood, the staff and volunteers love a fun competition, so games are frequently a part of the market's special events. They have previously held animal events, such as "The Market's Going to the Dogs," and explained they've wanted to host an Olympic type event for a while. It wasn't until recently that the idea came to fruition to have feathered friends as competitors vying for the gold.

The Chicken Olympics will be free for the public to watch. Make your way down to Old Town to cheer on the bird athletes as they compete.
