A top Colorado Avalanche prospect has joined the Colorado Eagles roster.

Forward Alex Newhook signed a three-year entry level contract on March 31 after his sophomore season concluded at Boston College. He was assigned to the Colorado Eagles of the AHL.

Newhook was drafted by the Avalanche with the 16th overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft.

The 20-year-old Newhook had made an immediate impact in college hockey. He received the Tim Taylor Award for being the NCAA Division I Rookie of the Year as a freshman in the 2019-20 season. He collected 42 points that season with 19 goals and 23 assists. He was the hero with four game-winning goals during that freshman campaign.

While quarantine protocols limited his most recent season to just 12 games, Newhook was productive in the small sample size with 7 goals and 9 assists.

The Canadian native to St. John's, Newfoundland also played in the the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.

He'll be adding a lot of raw talent to the Colorado Eagles.

Another young prospect joining is also joining the team in forward Sampo Ranta. The Avalanche's third round pick of the 2018 draft signed a a three-year entry level contract and was assigned to the Colorado Eagles.

The 20-year-old Ranta, a native of Finland, just finished his junior season at the University of Minnesota where he scored 31 points in 31 games, including a career-high 19 goals.
