Colorado Resident Robert Gieswein Denied Custody Release for January Capitol Riot Involvement

As reported by Jeremy Jojola, an investigative reporter with 9News, Woodland Park resident Robert Gieswein has officially been denied release from custody after a judge ruled against his request on July 27, 2021.

Gieswein was originally tied to the January riot at the United States Capitol and arrested for his involvement. 9News reported on the six counts of indictment Gieswein was facing in his initial arrest in January.

Timeline of Gieswein's arrest and indictment (per the US Department of Justice):

January 18, 2021: Arrested in the District of Colorado

January 25, 2021: Detention hearing

January 27, 2021: Indicted on 6 counts

July 2021: Judge denied Gieswein's request to be released from custody

July 29, 2021: Status hearing set

According to the official indictment report from the Department of Justice, Gieswein is facing one count of obstruction of an official proceeding; three counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon; one count of destruction of government property; and one count of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

Gieswein was seen storming the capitol with an aerosol irritant spray and a baseball bat and dressed in full army gear. After entering the capitol by reportedly breaking a window, Gieswein's obstruction of an official proceeding charge is because the riot took place before a Congress hearing. While in the capitol building, Gieswein used to force to assault and resist a capitol police officer and a government employee.

With the request denial, Gieswein will remain in jail for the entirety of his trial until his status hearing that is set for July 29.
