Did You Know? This Popular Comedian Doubled as a Colorado Teacher
If you don't know who Chris Voth is, you should.
The comedian is currently on tour with comedy legend Ron White, but performing wasn't always his full-time job. Until recently, he was teaching (and coaching basketball) at Pomona High School (PHS) in Arvada.
Teaching came later to Voth, who, according to his website, started his career at Denver's Comedy Works in the late '90s. Right now, he is taking a sabbatical from PHS to focus on comedy, but education still holds a place in his heart.
"Once I started teaching, I found that I loved it. I loved being a part of students' lives and serving them in any way I could," Voth told Townsquare NoCo. "I have always loved balancing two careers because I think it's such a privilege to be involved in young people's lives."
But Voth wasn't just balancing two careers. He was also earning a Doctorate in Education from the University of Denver while still teaching at PHS.
However, he noted that his students weren't too starstruck by his (relative, according to Voth) success.
"Students these days Google their teachers week one and find out whatever they can find out. After a while, that was just not that big of a deal to them," he said. "High schoolers have their own lives and hopes/dreams, so while they may have appreciated that their teacher was doing stand-up at night or on weekends, it was [not] mentioned that often."
Still, Voth recognizes that being a teacher and a comedian is unusual. He hopes to write a book about his unique journey by 2022.
