October is Radon Awareness Month and the City of Fort Collins wants you to be prepared. They will be giving out free radon kits at the Lyric Cinema Cafe in Fort Collins October 1st starting at 1pm, but that's not all!

The City of Fort Collins Lead Indoor Air Quality Specialist, Selina Lujan, spoke with "Tuned In to NoCo" about the event. Lujan says they will also be doing a raffle and having some fun activities the whole family can enjoy.

"By attending you will get a free radon test kit and popcorn and soda. So, if you want to catch a movie later you can. We are going to have a $25 Visa gift card raffle and we are going to have some fun kids' activities — we really want this to be a family-friendly event. So, if you have kiddos bring them out too! We want this to be fun and inviting and also educational."

Lujan says with Halloween right around the corner, they will be dressing up and having candy there as well. Along with this, Lujan says they have something really powerful planned for attendees.

"We have two speakers coming in. One is a lung cancer survivor and the other is her husband, who is her caregiver. They are going to talk about their story as it relates to radon. It's extremely powerful and it's coming from someone who was extremely healthy and never smoked in her life, got lung cancer and had high levels of radon in her home. It's a powerful story and I think it will just show that it can happen to anybody no matter the situation."

Lujan says the main goal of this event is to educate and prepare the community to test their homes this fall.

"We are really wanting people to not only understand what radon is and the risks but most importantly, to test. So you know what your levels are in your home and you can take action if needed."
