Got a Colorado Town for Spotify Wrapped? What You Need to Know
Once November starts to roll around, music listeners across the world start to get excited (or prepare for embarrassment) to see their Spotify Wrapped.
Wrapped is a viral marketing campaign created by Spotify that has taken the world by storm ever since its introduction in 2016. At the end of each year, the streaming service shows each user their listening from the past year, along with fun features to keep people engaged.
Spotify rolled out a couple of new fun additions for this year’s rollout, but one that has gotten people talking the most seems to be the inclusion of “Sound Towns”. Here, Spotify looks at some of your most-played artists of the year and finds a city that generally is listening to similar music.
With over 1,300 “Sound Town” cities listed, many have noticed people keep getting the same three; Burlington, Vermont, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Berkley, California.
However, three cities in Colorado have also been popular amongst the streaming service’s picks, with those being Fort Collins, Boulder, and Colorado Springs.
We’re going to take a dive into the artists and genres that are connecting people to each of these Colorado cities, not only to explain what is connecting people from around the world to them but to see what each place is generally listening to.
What People in Fort Collins, Colorado Were Listening to in 2023
Fort Collins seemed to be a top destination for many people across TikTok, and for a town with a great music scene, it makes a lot of sense.
According to a thread on Reddit, it seems a lot of people who were given Fort Collins as their “Sound Town” generally have tendencies that lean toward indie music. The alternative rock and indie group Rainbow Kitten Surprise comes up quite a bit for listeners. Many avid listeners of the band Hippo Campus and the singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers also were placed in Fort Collins.
However, there were plenty of other different genres that were tied to Fort Collins. It would seem people in the city love Wu-Tang Clan. Many people also cited the DJ GRiZ as a part of their connection to FoCo.
What People in Boulder, Colorado Were Listening to in 2023
Another major city people were getting as their “Sound Town” in their 2023 Wrapped was Boulder. The city also has a great music scene as well, with great venues The Fox Theatre which always seems to have great shows.
According to a thread on Reddit, it appears Boulder is really in tune with the classics. Many people shared an interest in classic rock bands like Fleetwood Mac and Jefferson Airplane. Also, many people got Dead and Company, which makes sense because of both the band’s and Grateful Dead’s history with the city of Boulder.
However, it would appear many fans of electronic music also were directed to Boulder as their “Sound Town”. Many people have a shared interest in the electronic duos ODESZA and Zeds Dead. The overlap was noted by user PressureContent2682, who noted that it seems,”...anyone who has electronic and a bit of alt-rock or indie is getting Boulder”.
What People in Colorado Springs, Colorado Were Listening to in 2023
Finally, a considerable number of people around the world seemed to get Colorado Springs as well.
What seems to be evident for Colorado Springs is that the people there tend to enjoy heavier music. For one, the metalcore band Currents seemed to be an artist multiple people could agree with on the Colorado Springs Reddit thread. Also, the alternative and progressive metal outfit Sleep Token seems to be a favorite amongst people in the Springs.
On the other hand, some people in the thread seemed to be confused by all of this heaviness. Some people argued Colorado Springs’ sounds fit more of an indie mold. However, another Springs mainstay appears to be Matt Kearney, who is someone many people in the thread could agree on.
What People in Denver, Colorado Were Listening to in 2023
Denver is an interesting case since while it is the biggest city in Colorado, it seems Spotify picked it less as a “Sound Town” than the other three.
However, Spotify did release the top five songs Denverites couldn’t get enough of this year. According to KDVR, Denver’s most streamed songs were:
- “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen
- “Something in the Orange” by Zach Bryan
- “Kill Bill” by SZA
- “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus
- “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armando and Peso Pluma
Even though we have Denver’s most streamed songs, what bands or artists do you think makeup Denver’s sound palette? For Fort Collins, Boulder, and Colorado Springs, do you think the artists that were chosen represent what people are listening to in each of these cities?
