When you think of wine country, you might immediately think of Napa Valley, California, or the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I've driven through both of these wine regions, and they are stunning, to say the least.

When it comes to wine regions, Colorado doesn't really come to mind, does it? You might want to change your thinking on that, as one part of Colorado has been named one of the best wine regions in the nation.

Colorado Wine Region Ranked Among Best in America

There are wine regions all over the United States and in places you might not have thought would be sustainable for a winery. Locations like Texas Hill Country, Texas, or Augusta, Missouri. Yet, these places have landed on a list of the best wine regions in the United States.

On the list released by USA Today's 10 Best, one Colorado wine region has been ranked as the second best on the list. This wine region has some of the highest-elevation vineyards in North America, making the wine fresh, smooth, aromatic, and most importantly, flavorful.

West Elks AVA Lands at No. 2 on USA Today 10Best List

The West Elks Viticultural Area makes the best wine regions list from the wine characteristics above, plus two major annual events in the region. North Fork Uncorked and the West Elks Wine Trail.

Two high-altitude wineries from the Rocky Mountain Wine Growing Region were also named in the notable mention on USA Today's 10 Best list. Alfred Eames Cellars and 5680 Vineyards provide an excellent selection of the region's best offerings when it comes to wine.
