One of the biggest costs in the wintertime in Colorado is the utility bill. Most furnaces in the state of Colorado operate on natural gas. When the temperatures drop outside, the use of natural gas increases in the home. There is nothing we can do about Mother Nature being frigid in the winter, we just have to deal with it.

A lot of Colorado residents struggle with the cost versus comfort factor when the temperatures dip in the winter. The good news is that you may see a decrease in your utility bill this winter.

According to BizWest, Xcel Energy plans to reduce natural gas bills in the fourth quarter of 2024. Xcel Energy has requested approval from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to lower the cost of natural gas usage for customers in the last months of the year.

Colorado Could See Cheaper Utility Bills This Winter

The proposed reduction in prices for natural gas for Colorado residents using Xcel Energy is a ten-and-a-half percent decrease, or $9.15 on a monthly bill. Colorado small businesses could also save some money when it comes to the utility bill too. A proposed eleven percent reduction, or $42 per month decrease on monthly natural gas bills compared to winter 2023.

If the reduced rates for natural gas are approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, Colorado residents will see the new utility rate start on October 1 and every month after until the end of the year.

Natural gas isn't the only utility that could see a decrease in cost. Residential customers of Xcel Energy could also see a decrease of 13 cents per month on electricity. We know, it's not a lot of money, but every little bit counts. Especially during the holiday season. Colorado small businesses will see an increase in electricity rates, at approximately 91 cents more every month.
