Fun Finds While Geocaching in Colorado

Geocaching combines exploring, navigating, problem-solving, and treasure hunting into a fun-filled interactive activity, that people of all ages can participate in. The thrilling, scavenger hunt-style game was created in 2000 and has since taken off worldwide.

GPS coordinates and provided clues lead participants to various locations where caches are hidden. Geocaches can vary in size and appearance, ranging from clear plastic containers and ammo cans to film canisters, and fake rocks or logs with secret compartments. There are also historical and earth series caches, that lead to noteworthy places in town. Once a cache is located, the finder records it on the official Geocache app and writes their name in the logbook inside the container.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, geocaches can also include low-cost trinkets like toys and souvenirs inside. In these situations, it’s common for finders to swap an item they brought for something else in the cache. However, many of the micro-sized caches may only have enough room to hold a paper log.

Currently, there are thousands of active geocaches hidden throughout the country and millions worldwide. Geocaching not only leads to beautiful sights and interesting locations, but it also gets people out and about, discovering local places they may have never known existed.
