Pet Store Shut Down in Northern Colorado Due to New Law

You might remember a new law that passed in the city of Fort Collins earlier this year that banned the ability of any business or entity to sell pets in retail.

This means that in Fort Collins, the retail purchase or sale of pets is prohibited. The ban is to promote animal welfare and discourage inhumane breeding practices.

A pet store in Fort Collins is shutting down and the new law seems to be the reason behind it.

Pet City in Fort Collins to Close

Denver7 reports that Pet City, which is located on South College Avenue has shut down. Pet City closed their doors for good in November and all of their employees and staff were laid off as well.

The Coloradoan talked to the previous owner of Pet City and she said that 90 percent of the revenue when she worked there was from pet sales. As you can imagine, when 90 percent of a business becomes banned, it would be impossible for the business to remain open.

The ban on pet retail sales begins in the city of Fort Collins on May 20.

More Colorado Cities Plan for Retail Pet Ban

Commerce City is making national headlines right now because they are making moves to make a similar ban as the city of Fort Collins.

Many residents of Commerce City support the ban due to the fact that shelters across Colorado are full and they find puppy mills, as they refer to them, as inhumane.
