Unique Way to Get Cheap Food in Colorado Returns for 15th Year
Winter in Colorado can be fun, with skiing, snowboarding, building snowmen and such, but it can also get cold. Once a week for a month in winter, a little cold can pay off.
The cost of heating your home goes up in winter, saving a few dollars for a tasty meal because you have to turn up the heat, is a fair trade, in my books. It's a shame that there's only one of these restaurants in Colorado.
Call it silly, but fans mark their calendars for it, every year.
Cold Winters Bring fun Food Promotion to Colorado
Once a week for the month of January every year, since 2010, Runza Restaurants have had a promotion linking the the price of one of their Runza sandwiches to the outdoor temperature.
During this "Temperature Tuesdays" timeframe, whatever the temperature is at an undisclosed "Runza Territory" location at 6:00 a.m., that is the price of a regular Runza sandwich (with the purchase of a medium drink and fries) for that Tuesday.
The price never drops below zero dollars, even though the temperature may drop below zero degrees.
There is currently only one Runza in Colorado, in Loveland. They're mostly found in Nebraska, where the chain started back in 1949. At one point, Colorado had three locations open at once, but they've failed to take off here, other than the Loveland spot.
What Is a Runza Sandwich, Exactly?
Runzas are yeast dough bread pocket with a filling consisting of ground beef, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions, and seasonings. I worked at that Loveland Runza when I was young, and had the description memorized.
