Recently, Montrose residents heard about some fires on the Uncompahgre Plateau that are raising big concerns across the Western Slope. Authorities say multiple ignition points were discovered near Rim Road and 90 Road that are sending up immediate red flags.

As wildfire season approaches, conditions in Montrose County are very dry. Investigators have confirmed the ignition points found in the wildlands of the Uncompahgre were set intentionally, leading to an arrest that is gaining widespread reaction.

Fire crews were called out to respond to reports of smoke back on March 28, and when they arrived at the area near Rim Road and 90 Road, they found multiple ignition points, prompting an arson investigation. This area, southwest of the city of Montrose near Silesca Pond, is remote and prone to fires. KJCT8.com reports both the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office and BLM confirm the fire was intentionally set.

Who Was Arrested and What Charges Are Filed?

Following an investigation, Montrose County authorities arrested 29-year-old Penelope Eleanor Josephson in connection with the fires. She will face second-degree arson charges, which are a Class 4 felony in Colorado, carrying a prison sentence and fines that will depend on the outcome of the case. Montrose authorities emphasized the seriousness of intentionally setting fires in a wildland area and promised to prosecute those attempting arson to the fullest extent of the law.
