Rare but Deadly Superbug Found in Colorado Hospitals Raises Health Concerns
2020 was the year that saw the COVID-19 pandemic change the world, and not only were most Coloradans infected, but some never recovered.
Now, what the CDC is calling a “superbug” is making its way across the nation, and infections have been reported in Colorado.
What is the New Superbug that is in Colorado?
The aforementioned superbug is known as Candida auris and is a type of fungus that is resistant to drugs and can kill its host after they are infected.
The superbug was first discovered to be present in the United States in 2016 and has largely spread in hospitals via IVs, catheters, and breathing tubes.
It has been reported that the deadly fungus has infected roughly 7,000 people in the nation in 2025, but the worst year for people being infected with Candida auris was 2024, when 7,500 people were said to have been infected.
How Serious is the Superbug in Colorado?
Luckily, as of the end of 2025, only three cases of Candida auris were reported in Colorado. However, other states across the nation have not been so lucky.
The majority of cases in 2025 were reported in Nevada at over 1,600, with California barely trailing as the second-most infected state. Other states with large numbers of infected individuals include Texas with over 800, Illinois with nearly 500, and Ohio with roughly 400.
