What Are Colorado's Zebra Mussels?
Zebra mussels are a form of mussel found in freshwater bodies of water and are native to Russia and Ukraine. The species is named for its unique striped pattern on its shell and was first described in 1769 by a German zoologist.
The first instance of a zebra mussel being discovered in Colorado was in 2022 at Highline Lake. However, the initial zebra mussel discovery was that of a non-fully-grown specimen, and the first instance of an adult zebra mussel being discovered in Colorado took place earlier this month in the Colorado River in Grand Junction.
Why Are Zebra Mussels in Colorado a Problem?
Zebra mussels are described as invasive and destructive and are known to reproduce rapidly, causing problems in aquatic ecosystems.
This particular type of mussel is also known to cause serious problems with water infrastructure and is nearly impossible to eradicate.
Why Are There Now Zebra Mussels in Colorado?
While it's largely unknown how the zebra mussels were introduced to Highline Lake in 2022 and now Grand Junction, zebra mussels were previously discovered in a private body of water in Eagle County, and it has been theorized that the infestation began there.
