A small plane en route to Colorado's Centennial Airport, crashed in Lone Tree Wednesday (June 16), tragically killing two people and a dog that were aboard the flight.

South Metro Fire Rescue tweeted that the accident occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m., just a couple of miles from the Centennial Airport.

The aircraft reportedly hit an electrical line, which then caused it to go down in an open field near I-25.

Following the crash, a small brush fire broke out in the vicinity. Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, along with South Metro Fire crews. The Parker Chronicle said that although there were still some hot spots at the crash site, emergency crews had the flames under control within an hour. No structures were in the area of the crash or fire.

Residents in Lone Tree and Parker were without power for several hours while Xcel crews worked to repair the downed lines.

The plane crash is currently being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. The Parker Chronicle noted the involved aircraft was a single-engine turbo propeller Lancair Evolution.

The Centennial Airport is not used for commercial flights. Rather, it's considered a general aviation airport, used mainly for flight training, corporate charters, small cargo, and various other reasons.
