Earlier this month I took a trip to Barcelona. This city was love at first sight. I loved everything about the capital of Catalonia. Especially the food. Tapas, churros, seafood, and paella.

Thankfully, we walked so much that the feasts in Barcelona were offset by the sightseeing. As a birthday present, my mother-in-law and brother-in-law bought us a unique cooking experience in Spain where we learned to cook the Spanish dish known as Paella.

The experience at The Paella Club Barcelona was one of the most memorable experiences of the entire trip. As you can see in the photo above, the class was full and so were the wine glasses.

The Cava was flowing and everyone had a great time learning how to make this unique dish. My wife and I teamed up to make the Paella Negra. This specific paella had squid ink and cuttlefish as the highlight of the dish.

When our Spanish adventure came to an end and we were jolted back into everyday life, I immediately began the search to hold on to those moments in Barcelona for as long as I could.

The Search for the Perfect Paella Pan Begins

Over the course of a few days, I searched for the perfect paella pan for our home. I eventually bought a 12-inch enameled paella pan made by Garcima on Amazon. This pan fit my largest burner on the cooktop perfectly.

Paella de Marisco Ingredients

Paella de Marisco is a variant of paella with seafood and is my personal favorite. I was lucky enough to pick up a bottle of Spanish olive oil, sweet paprika, authentic saffron, and Bomba rice while we were in Barcelona. These four ingredients are very important to a good paella dish.

Other paella ingredients include:

  • Seafood - I used squid tubes, shrimp, and mussels
  • Bomba Rice - Risotto rice can be used as a substitute
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Red bell pepper
  • Seafood stock
  • Lemon rind
  • Tomato puree
  • Dry white wine

I won't explain how to cook the paella. Instead, I will show you a video that gives a pretty good rundown on how to make it.

Looks pretty tasty, right? There are so many ways you can make paella. Chicken, rabbit, mushroom, vegetarian, and more. I am sure I will be creating more fun paella dishes at home in the near future.

This was my first attempt at making Paella de Marisco at home. My first solo run at cooking paella came out great.
