U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ryan T. Daggett from Greeley was just named the United Service Organizations Airman of the Year; Dagget was one of six recipients of the USO Service Member of the Year award for 2021.

United Service Organizations Service Members of the Year are recognized annually for their heroic and selfless actions.

Getting To Know Staff Sgt. Ryan T. Daggett of Greeley

Staff Sgt. Daggett serves with the U.S. Air Force’s 8th Security Forces Squadron and is currently stationed at Kunsan Air Base in Gunsan, South Korea.

According to USO, at Daggett's last duty station in Azores, Portugal, he had gone on a spiritual resiliency trip to the nearby island of São Miguel when he witnessed a major car accident involving three vehicles and nine local nationals.

"Without hesitation, he established priorities of care and identified a nonresponsive victim trapped inside a vehicle. He pried open the disabled car door, safely extricated the patient from the vehicle, and rendered critical first-aid treatment. Daggett’s immediate actions and quick decision-making ultimately saved a life."

This wasn't the only instance in which Daggett had stepped in to save someone else's life -

Prior to where he is currently stationed, Daggett served at Osan Air Base in South Korea, and at Ramstein Air Base in Germany; he was then selected to serve as an airborne member in the 75th D-Day anniversary celebration due to his technical expertise and experience.

USO says that, in a separate exercise with the Army, Daggett saved a fellow paratrooper’s life by sprinting toward a soldier who had become entangled within his parachute and freed him.

The Greeley Tribune reported that, despite Daggett’s undeniably selfless, lifesaving efforts, he remains humble about the recognition from the United Service Organizations and the events that transpired on the day of the crash; however, he wishes the efforts of the other people on his trip who also fell witness to the crash would also be recognized.

“It’s cool being recognized for it, but I didn’t really do this act for an award,” Daggett said. “It doesn’t really change anything, like change my mentality or ego or anything like that.”
