Little Free Libraries were created in 2009 by several residents in Wisconsin. Twelve years later, their small-town idea has transformed into a massive non-profit organization with more than 125,00 of these book-exchange boxes in hundreds of communities around the world

These colorful boxes are placed in different areas throughout a city, such as public parks or on street corners. Neighbors can add books or exchange one in place of another, but really anyone can put books inside that they are okay with parting with and happy to see others take.

One of the benefits of LFLs is 24/7 access to books without needing any sort of membership. Little Free Libraries also make an effort to have literary options available representing BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other diverse voices. This is aimed to promote understanding, empathy, and inclusion in communities.
