Smart phones have created a whole new career path: the Instagram influencer. And apparently, the youth of Colorado really want to be one.

According to a new poll from PRFire.com, more than one quarter, or 26%, of Coloradans ages 18 to 24 would rather have a verified Instagram account than a college degree. For those unfamiliar with social media lingo, being 'verified' indicates that you are a notable public figure.

Their choice may seem frivolous, but it's not the worst decision financially — influencers are able to make over $100,000 per Instagram post if they have more than a million followers.

Unfortunately, influencers aren't few and far between. With such stark competition, it may take a while for an Instagram verification to become lucrative.

"We are an age of information consumers, meaning there is constant pressure to make sure you content is relevant to your audience, up-to-date and aligns with your personal values and messages," said Sam Allcock, Director and Founder of PRFire.com, in a press release. "In my opinion, a college degree sounds more appealing!"

But even though many Colorado youth don't seem to find college appealing, they aren't totally writing it off. 75% of those surveyed said they thought schools should teach social media safety.

Still, just in case...feel free to check out this list of the most-Instagrammed places in Colorado.
