Several emergency vehicles lined the 800 block of Peterson Street in Fort Collins Sunday evening, as Poudre Fire Authority and Fort Collins Police responded to a house fire in the Old Town neighborhood.

According to Poudre Fire Authority, the fire started just after 7 p.m., and when crews arrived at the home a couple blocks east of College Avenue, they located a fire burning in the basement. Firefighters found one deceased adult in the home. No one else was injured.

Firefighters called in a second alarm after arriving on the scene, finding smoke and flames on the back side of the house. Poudre Fire Authority was on the scene until shortly after 9:30 p.m., but investigators remained on site.

In addition to knocking down the fire, crews had to work to reinforce the floor, because the fire was in the basement of the home. The cause is still under investigation.

Less than two hours later, Fort Collins Police responded to a fatal car accident in the same neighborhood, on E. Mulberry Street.
