The Greeley Police Department has made a commitment to the community to notify them of when a sex offender who has met the criteria for a "Sexually Violent Predator" is moving into the area.

Although law enforcement can not actively prohibit where sex offenders live, they can notify the community.

Greeley Police have notified the Greeley community of a man named Mario Ortega, who has been labeled as a Sexually Violent Predator, moving into the area. He is considered a greater risk than normal to the community, thus why the department is upholding its promise to notify the people.

Ortega was convicted of attempted sexual assault of a child, a class 5 felony. He is currently on parole. He is described as a 38-year-old white male, 5'9", and 256 pounds.

The Greeley Police Department reported that there are 20,072 total registered sex offenders living in Colorado. 417 of which are registered with the Greeley Police Department alone. Of those 417, 9 of them are Sexually Violent Predators.

Greeley Police remind the community to know what Ortega looks like, as well as other offenders in the area, and to immediately call 911 if you witness them doing anything suspicious or inappropriate.

For anyone impacted by or concerned about the announcement of Ortega's move into the community, the Greeley Police Department has provided several resources. At any time, you can contact GreeleyPolice Victim's Services, Weld County Law Enforcement Victim's Services, Sexual Assault Victim Advocacy, and A Kid's Place.
