How CDOT is Helping Mitigate and Educate About Kids’ Risk in Car Crashes
With increased traffic and construction taking over the streets and highways of Northern Colorado, word of accidents and road safety has become more important than ever.
The Colorado Department of Transportation has partnered closely with hospitals to provide child passenger safety education. Recently, CDOT held a press conference where they talked first hand about the consequences of inadequate vehicle safety.
Car seats, booster seats, and seat belts all serve a valuable purpose for passenger safety. According to Car Seats Colorado, 2019 saw an average of two children under 13 killed every day in car crashes.
In the same release, Car Seats Colorado quoted that car crashes were the third leading cause of preventable injury for 0-14-year-olds seen and treated at the Swedish Medical Center. Of those children, 60% were ejected from their vehicle in the crash.
What is Colorado doing about these numbers?
Because of these statistics, Car Seats Colorado partnered up with the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) to educate and provide outreach on passenger safety during the week of Sept. 19-25, which also serves as Passenger Safety Week.
What can you do to feel safer about your kids/passengers?
In turn, in order to provide more comfort and peace of mind to parents, DOTI, in partnership with HealthONE will be holding seat check fit stations throughout Passenger Safety Week.
If you can't make the pop-up seat check fits this week, checks are also available statewide. And they're free!
Remember to stay safe, buckle up, and understand the responsibility you have for yourself, your passengers, as well as other drivers who share the road.
