There is nothing worse than a flight delay... or a flight cancellation.

Actually, there is something worse than just one delay or just one cancellation (for the airline at least) - try thousands of them.

Southwest Airlines, Denver International Airport’s (DIA) second-biggest airline, has canceled and delayed thousands of flights nationwide over the weekend, putting the blame on air traffic control issues and disruptive weather.

Among those cancellations, over 100 inbound and outbound flights were canceled at DIA on Sunday (Oct. 10), according to FlightAware, a flight-tracking website.

On Saturday (Oct. 9), Denver7 said 50% of Southwest flights out of DIA were either canceled or delayed.

In a tweet via the official Southwest Airlines Twitter page (@SouthwestAir), customers whose flights were affected due to a delay or cancellation were asked to "explore [our] self-service rebooking options".

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a statement via Twitter on Sunday regarding Southwest's abrupt cancellations. According to the statement via the FAA there were no staffing shortages reported over the weekend.

"No FAA air traffic staffing shortages have been reported since Friday. Flight delays and cancellations occurred for a few hours Friday afternoon due to widespread severe weather, military training, and limited staffing in one area of the Jacksonville Air Route Traffic Control Center. Some airlines continue to experience scheduling challenges due to aircraft and crews being out of place.", the Oct. 10 tweet stated.

As of Sunday morning, Flight Aware reported a total of 53 delays on Southwest flights at DIA and a total of 157 cancellations on Sunday alone.

As such, those traveling in or out of Denver International Airport should expect wait times to be longer than usual.
