A recent study by WalletHub puts Colorado drivers in the bottom 10 among the worst drivers in the country.

The state came in as the ninth-worst due to factors of cost and ownership, traffic and infrastructure, safety, and access to vehicles and maintenance.

In Northern Colorado, Interstate 25 and other highways have been known for having major accidents. The Colorado Department of Transportation offers live updates on its website for crash information and when you should take alternate routes.

CDOT's most recent crash data says there were 7,439 crashes in Larimer County and 6,269 in Weld County in 2019. While one would suspect winter would be the most dangerous, the data says September and October produce the most crashes.

Here are some of the worst accidents shared by Colorado State Patrol on Northern Colorado roadways over the past five years:

CDOT shares these safe-driving tips with the public:

  • Expect the unexpected. Construction zones tend to pop up everywhere.
  • Slow down. Speeding is one of the main causes in work zone crashes.
  • Don't tailgate. Keeping a safe distance can help prevent crashes. One of the most common crashes in Colorado is a rear-end collision. It is recommended to leave two car lengths between you and other vehicles.
  • Stay alert: Dedicate your attention to the road way. Avoid changing radio stations and using cell phones in construction zones.
