This Fort Collins Bar Was Ranked As the Best Speakeasy in America
Yelp recently compiled a data-driven list of America's top 50 speakeasy bars. These establishments often fly under the radar but offer incredibly alluring ambiances and creative craft cocktails inspired by the Prohibition era.
Sometimes, just accessing a speakeasy can be an experience in itself. At quite a few of these places, patrons must first track down the inconspicuous destination, and then, can enter only after providing a secret phrase or code. At other speakeasies, like Denver's Williams & Graham, guests are led into the bar through a hidden door that's found behind an unassuming bookcase in the lobby.
Another Colorado speakeasy with this sort of concept is Social, located near the entrance of Old Town Square in Fort Collins. The authentic 1920s-style underground cocktail lounge can be found by walking down an unmarked stairwell off East Mountain Avenue. A large black and white clock stands on the sidewalk out front to help mark the location.
Once entering Social, bar-goers are in for a unique experience that can't be found anywhere else in town. The industrial-style speakeasy specializes in serving up creative cocktails, as well as charcuterie and other small plates. The establishment also offers ample absinthe and wine selections. Whether it's meeting friends for happy hour, enjoying a first date, or sharing celebratory drinks before an event, Social is a must-stop for everyone.
The many efforts that Social has put into their lavish lounge landed them at No.1 on Yelp's list of the best top 50 speakeasy bars in the country. The Northern Colorado business has a five-star rating on the review-based restaurant website, with more than 600 comments from patrons singing its praises.
The intimate interior is filled with fine decor and pieces that might have been present in the actual period of prohibition. Stepping down the stairs makes guests feel as though they've been transported to another era.
Several other Colorado speakeasies ranked high on the list, including the previously mentioned Williams & Graham, who came in at No. 31. Brooklyn’s on Boulder St. in Colorado Springs wasn't too far behind that, at No. 33.
