39 Abandoned Cats Need Emergency Donations At The Weld County Humane Society
The Humane Society of Weld County needs our help.
On Wednesday (Oct. 27), staff members with the Humane Society of Weld County received a call from the city of Greeley regarding a hoarding case involving 35 cats; officials with the city had called to let the Humane Society know that they'd be coming in with these cats.
The call came in with only a few minutes' notice.
And, although the Humane Society was told that there would be 35 cats coming in, there actually wound up being 39 cats that were taken over to the animal shelter.
Once the cats showed up at the Humane Society of Weld County (located at 1620 42nd St. in Evans), those who help care for the animals at the shelter were able to blatantly see that many of these cats were not in good condition.
According to Kara Englert, a member of the Humane Society of Weld County Board of Directors, most of the cats were afraid and nervous on contact, one of the cats had suffered a broken leg, and another was even put in a "makeshift collar" - aka a rubber band hair tie that was, very clearly, wrapped around the cat's neck much too tight.
"When I heard this was happening, it didn't even surprise me [at this point]," Englert said.
She added that there have been four hoarding incidents of this caliber reported to the Humane Society of Weld County since November 2020; this most recent hoarding incident now marks the 5th since last year.
How You Can Help
Due to an increase in the number of animals the shelter has taken in this year, they have already been running low on supplies and space to properly house these animals - and this hoarding case was not about to make matters at the shelter any better.
Thanks to our incredible Northern Colorado community, several people have already begun to donate food, kennels, towels, and toys to the shelter.
However, the shelter still needs help in a big way.
Several of the cats that have just been taken to the Humane Society of Weld County desperately need veterinary care. Due to the poor health conditions that many of these cats were left in (for who knows how long), the shelter expects the cost of caring for these cats to range anywhere between $5,000-10,000.
Aside from monetary donations, the cats brought into the shelter earlier this week desperately need food (dry/wet) - as all were left extremely hungry - as well as additional linens, towels, and blankets.
To donate to the Humane Society of Weld County, you can make an online donation here, or visit the shelter with any other donations at 1620 42nd St. in Evans.
Any donation made is so incredibly appreciated.
If You're Looking To Adopt...
In addition to donating to the Humane Society of Weld County, the shelter currently has hundreds of animals up for adoption.
As of Oct. 15, the shelter had 123 cats and kittens in foster care. "As of today, we now have nearly 80 kittens up for adoption.", Englert said on Friday (Oct. 29).
Englert went on to explain the effects of "kitten season", which she says is a very real thing.
"Kitten season" refers to the period of time when female cats are often giving birth to their litters.
"Kitten season normally starts in the spring when the weather starts to warm up (around February, March, and April) and will typically end when it starts to cool down (around October). Between last year and this year, though, kitten season never ended.", Englert said.
When kitten season doesn't end, more cats are brought into the shelter.
If you're on the hunt for a fur-ever friend, consider adopting a cat from the Humane Society of Weld County.
