Border War: Chance for CSU Football to Kick It Into Gear
With the annual Border War football game coming up between Colorado State and Wyoming, it's about to be a weekend full of tradition.
Last year, the Rams brought home The Bronze Boot for the first time since 2015 when they beat the Cowboys 26-7 in an empty Canvas Stadium.
With the Cowboys really struggling this season, going 0-4 in conference so far to be exact, the game should be a sure-fire win for the Rams.
What the Rams Need to Do
I'm assuming most of us saw the frustrating decline of the Boise State game last Saturday. Slightly reminiscent of the Broncos' come back in 2017, but still not quite as bad.
It's been said for weeks by anyone who watches, covers, or coaches the team: productivity in the red zone has to be better.
Against Boise State, the Rams scored five times, four of which were field goals. The Broncos? All four of their scores were touchdowns. And, for CSU, all four of Cayden Camper's field goals were under 30 yards.
Todd Centeio even outthrew Boise State's quarterback with Centeio throwing for 276 yards and Hank Bachmeier throwing for just 253. Centeio has continued to get better each week, but the playcalling from the sidelines has to improve.
However, it was finishing out the drives downfield that fell incredibly short, and have been for the last few weeks. CSU was able to make it out with incredible defense holding San Jose State and New Mexico to just 14 points.
The offense can't just really on defensive efficiency - they need to finish out drives when they hit the red zone.
Colorado State has an incredible chance to beat Wyoming, and I'm almost 100% confident that will be the outcome.
The Rams need three more wins to even be considered for bowl contention, and with both Air Force and Nevada down the road over the next three weeks, CSU has put themselves in a much more difficult position than they needed to.
The annual Boot Run will also be kicking off tomorrow (Nov. 5) morning at 5 a.m. at Canvas Stadium as CSU ROTC runs to the Colorado-Wyoming Border to kick off the rivalry weekend.
