UPDATE: The test samples for blue-green algae from Windsor lake have returned positive. The Town of Windsor has closed Windsor Lake until further notice.

Another summer is here in Northern Colorado and so is the possibility for blue-green lake algae in Windsor lake. It seems like nearly every year there is a dangerous algae bloom at this lake in the town of Windsor. When this happens, it puts a damper on summer recreating at the lake.

The Windsor Parks, Recreation, and Culture department has announced this week that samples have been taken from Windsor Lake and sent off to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment for testing.

As a precaution, the Town of Windsor has placed advisory signs near the lake for the possible presence of blue-green lake algae. Visitors can then make informed decisions for their recreating plans until the test samples have been confirmed.

What is Blue-Green Lake Algae?

This specific type of algae is a bacteria called cyanobacteria and can be toxic according to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. This specific type of algae is a naturally occurring event in Colorado bodies of water.

The algae become an issue when the bacteria multiply quickly. When the algae multiply, the concentration of bacteria increases and creates what is known as a bloom. The algae bloom can then release toxins, making the water dangerous for humans and animals.

It is best to avoid these algae blooms by staying out of the water, not drinking the water, keeping pets and livestock from the affected body of water, and avoiding boating through the algae blooms.

Fish caught in algae bloom waters should be cleaned with fresh, clean water, and guts properly discarded. For more information about toxic algae blooms in Colorado, you can learn more at the Colorado Department of Health and Environment.
