The Northern Colorado Bomb Squad was deployed on Friday (Feb. 5).

A stretch of North College Avenue was closed for a couple hours and nearby businesses were evacuated as a suspicious package was found stuffed into a mailbox of a local business.

Fortunately the item turned out to be non-explosive. Fort Collins Police reported that the item was an auto part known as an advanced capacitor, likely meant for a nearby auto parts store.

Bomb squad investigators used a robot to scan the mailbox that was located on the 1100 block of N. College Avenue.

Suspicious Package

“I’m grateful for the fast response of officers, Bomb Squad, and area public safety partners who provided support," said Fort Collins Police Patrol Assistant Chief Kristy Volesky in the press release.

"Calling police was absolutely the right thing to do in this situation, and we always encourage people to report suspicious circumstances to law enforcement for investigation."

The Northern Colorado Bomb Squad is a partnership between Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Fort Collins Police and Loveland Police.

The bomb squad is available 24/7, 365 days a year. To make the squad, one most go through FBI and U.S. Army training. The bomb squad deputies are assigned for five years and complete other normal deputy duties as well.
